PROBA-V is a Belgian satellite replacing the French SPOT-4 and SPOT-5 satellite, arriving at the end of life. The mini-observatory will deliver every 2 days a comprehensive view of the vegetation on Earth. The data collected will not only follow the agricultural and plant resources on the entire planet, they also contribute to the study of climate change.

The Maroons also called bushinenge (bush people) are descendants of those Africans that were deported by Dutch traders to work as slaves on their plantations in Suriname. After escaping slavery, some of them settled next in the Amazone forest close to the Maroni river. They lived in hell for a long time but today I assure you it is a piece of paradise !

My friend Seke came to pic me up in a small airport surounded by the amazone forest on the borders of Suriname. We then started a long trip by boat on the Maroni river heading to his village located somewhere between the trees.

After spending the night along the coast with green and leatherback sea turtles, it is time to get back to the office. We’ll now be able to watch the mouvement of the GPSes we attached in near real-time on a map.

Gluing a GPS on this green sea turtle so that these scientist can persue their study on the behaviour and migration of this specie.
